Blackboard Course Template

Posted on: August 22nd, 2013 by Wan Latartara

Instructional Technology Designers at Online Design and eLearning has developed a Blackboard course template to serve as a starter for new and revising online courses. The template addresses good instructional design practices and several standards for online teaching. It consists of the following menus:

1. Getting Started

Getting Started welcomes students to the course. It contains important contact information of the instructor, the course policies, details of course structure, and any specific requirements for the course. Students are encouraged to complete this section before proceeding to course content. The course banner can be customized per school/college. See our Course Banners post for downloadable images for your school.

2. Syllabus

Sample syllabus, syllabus template, syllabus checklist, and placeholder for syllabus quiz can be found in this section. Instructors may download and modify the syllabus template to suit their needs.

3. Modules/Lessons

The Modules/Lessons section demonstrates the layout of course content.  Instructors may arrange their materials chronologically by weeks, or topic-oriented by modules. The terms can be modified to instructors’ preferences. New folders or modules can be created as more materials are added to the course.

4. Assessments

This section is intended for proctored exams, major assignments, or projects. If our department proctors exams for you, students will be required to follow the instructions presented in this section to schedule their proctored assessments.

5. Send Email

Students may send email to the instructor and their classmates. You may adjust email settings by navigating to Control Panel > Customization > Tool Availability > Email.

6. My Grades

My Grades give students quick access to their grades.

6. Student Resources

Here students will find a collection of tips, links, and websites relating to student readiness, Blackboard tutorials and support, library resources, and UM writing centers. They can also find more information about plagiarism &academic dishonesty, students with disabilities, and additional student services available to them.

Using the Template

The template can be downloaded here. We strongly recommend applying the template to an empty course shell, right after the course is enabled through MyOleMiss.

Follow these steps to apply the template to an empty course shell:

  1. Download the template above and save it on your computer.
  2. Go to your empty course shell or a newly enabled course in Blackboard.
  3. Delete all left navigation menu items.
  4. Under Control Panel, expand Packages and Utilities.
  5. Select Import Package / View Logs, then click on Import Package.
  6. Browse your computer and select the downloaded template (zip) file.
  7. Under Select Course Materials, push Select All, then Submit. Allow a few minutes for the process to complete.
