State Authorization

State authorization is the ability to do business in a state. It also includes the ability to offer educational opportunities to residents of a state or any activity associated with educational opportunities. State authorization is not limited to distance education and online programs. It encompasses everything that an institution is doing in another state, e.g., advertising, employment, internships, externships, recruitment, and any face-to-face activities. Therefore, it is important that the institution understand which activities serve students in another state and which activities constitute a physical presence in an outside state which would result in the need to seek authorization.
