What has Online Design & eLearning Been Up To – Spring 2015

ODeL has been very busy this semester. See below for a glimpse into our semester…

  • eLearning Teaching Course: 15 faculty members graduated and are endorsed as online instructors.
  • Faculty Travel Grants: Rachel Johnson in Writing & Rhetoric (eLearning 2015 in Las Vegas, NV), Chris Newman in Marketing (Society for Marketing Advances in New Orleans, LA), and Kerri Scott in Chemistry (Emerging Technologies for Online Learning International Symposium – virtual attendance).
  • WOW! Grants: Lynn Kugele (PMBA 611), Bob Mongue (LA 405), Deb Wenger (JOUR 101).
  • Storyline Grants: Nancy Douglas, Jeff Johnson, Rachel Johnson, Ivonne Liebenberg, Diane Lowry, Alice Myatt, Patti O’Sullivan, Mark Ortwein, William Sumrall, and Tamara Warhol.
  • Course Design Review: 6 review teams reviewed 24 online courses.
  • Paragon Award: Deb Wenger won for JOUR 102; Robin Street (JOUR 391) and Rich Gentry (PMBA 631) received Honorable Mentions.
  • Distance Education Testing Lab: despite snow and ice, DETL tested approximately 990 students at midterms and the staff is preparing to test over 1,000 students at finals. DETL also transitioned to a new online appointment scheduling system.
  • Hosted the ODeL Recognition Lunch to show our appreciation to all the faculty/staff members who have assisted ODeL through volunteering on committees and focus groups or who have participated in an ODeL Grant Series.
  • State Authorization: started a quarterly newsletter and obtained/maintained partial or complete exemption/authorization in 48 states for distance education, 43 states for experiential learning activities, and 25 states for Study USA.
  • Webinars: ODeL hosted 2 webinars in our suite and provided campus wide access for Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education Virtual Conference (60 live sessions over two weeks).
  • Anne worked with the Chancellor’s Committee on Accessibility to develop an academic accessibility unit, set up a pilot of real-time captioning at selected UM events, work with building mayors for tools to improve accessibility, and expand accessibility options on the UM website and online campus map.
  • Pari and Niki earned the ELI Supporting Excellence in Online Instruction 2015 Badge.
  • Wan was invited to present on Google Hangouts at the Google in the Classroom Conference hosted by the School of Education.
  • ODeL won the Human Resources Fall 2014 Walking Challenge for small departments.
