This faculty discussion group will focus on the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework to build social, cognitive, and teaching presence in their online courses.
The Community of Inquiry framework is a collaborative-constructivist model that has been part of successful online higher education learning for more than 20 years. Dr. Randy Garrison defines an educational community of inquiry as “a group of individuals who collaboratively engage in purposeful critical discourse and reflection to construct personal meaning and confirm mutual understanding” – CoI, Atahabasca University. This includes various ways to build the learning experience, from setting the climate and supporting discourse among students to support social presence, to selecting content for courses to support cognitive presence as well as teaching presence among students.
Who is this group for?
This discussion group would be a good fit for any online instructor who would like to interact with other instructors about engaging their students in the course, building student autonomy in their learning experience, and supporting successful completion of coursework.
What will this group do?
Instructors will experience the community of inquiry framework within this group and select some methods to building such a community in their courses. This group will meet online (Zoom) three times this semester with asynchronous discussion about common readings (and podcasts or videos) on Perusall between the meetings. The first meeting will be an introduction and planning meeting. You will be invited to join the group on Perusall for access to the materials we’ll discuss. There is no fee associated with this group. After signing up, you will get an invitation to a Doodle poll to help select a regular time to meet on Zoom.
